Neoen, one of the world’s leading renewable energy companies, has signed a 30 MW / 78 MWh tolling agreement with Uniper, a European energy company with global reach, for its Arneburg Battery in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The contract is due to commence in 2027 and has a duration of 7 years. During this period Uniper will have full control of the charging and discharging of the battery while Neoen will continue to manage the asset’s operation and maintenance. Uniper intends to optimize the asset across all revenue market channels from ancillary grid services to the wholesale market.
Arneburg Battery is Neoen’s first asset in Germany. The battery is currently mid-way through construction and is expected to be operational in 2026.
Neoen has been actively developing battery storage projects in Germany since 2023 from its offices in Karlsruhe and Hamburg and has established a significant pipeline of projects. The company intends to become a major player in the country’s storage market, leveraging its extensive expertise in developing and operating large-scale batteries around the globe. Neoen is a world-leading developer, owner and operator of big batteries. Its total storage portfolio currently stands at 2.7 GW / 8.1 GWh in operation or under construction.
Düsseldorf-based Uniper has operations in more than 40 countries and plays, with its flexible power generating capacity and as a leading gas trader, a key role in ensuring a secure energy supply in Europe, particularly in its core markets of Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Netherlands.
Christophe de Branche, Neoen’s Director of Energy Management, said: “I would like to congratulate the Neoen team for this achievement, and to thank Uniper for their constructive approach, which enabled us to secure a truly win–win agreement. With a substantial pipeline of projects in Germany, I am confident this marks the beginning of a strong collaboration between our two companies.”
Carsten Poppinga, CCO Uniper SE, commented:“We are delighted to partner with Neoen, one of the world’s most advanced battery developers. Uniper is a leading generator of power and offtaker of power from independent renewable generators, for example through Power Purchase Agreements, and supplier of energy to businesses. Agreeing battery tolls like this offers a way for Uniper to further diversify our portfolio and support the energy transition. We are proud of this first transaction and look forward to applying our optimization expertise to Neoen’s Arneburg Battery.”
Xavier Barbaro, Neoen’s Group CEO, concluded: “Neoen is proud to be one of the world’s leading players in battery storage, and we have ambitious plans for growing our portfolio in Germany. We are delighted to be working with Uniper to unlock the advantages of this important enabling technology for the German electricity market. Through delivering top quality assets and developing innovative services in response to the needs of our customers, we are helping to accelerate the energy transition in Germany, and around the world.”
